Duke Arts Presents

Tift Merritt & Allison Russell

Friday, April 16, 2021

In Spring 2021, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Tift Merritt and acclaimed singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell will introduce their new collaborative project commissioned by Duke Performances.

During their residency, Merritt and Russell will offer a free work-in-progress showing and discussion of the themes that underlie Hungry River, which explores the complex history of Cherry Hospital, a formerly segregated mental asylum in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The artists will share songs and stories, providing insight into the origins of the piece and a space to explore topics like memory, trauma, and resilience. This April 16 event is free and open to the public.
