In mid-August, Duke Arts welcomes ALHAMDU | MUSLIM FUTURISM, a month-long experiential art exhibition in Duke’s Rubenstein Arts Center created by NY-based arts and culture collective MIPSTERZ. This groundbreaking exhibit explores the theme of Muslim Futurism: an emerging aesthetic that draws inspiration from Afrofuturism to envision an inclusive, utopic tomorrow. Incorporating large-scale textiles, paintings, collages, experimental film, gaming, and an immersive installation, ALHAMDU invites visitors to imagine — and help create — a world in which Muslims exist boldly, proudly, and unapologetically. In conjunction with the exhibit, we also invite the public to join for a series of free programs, including a pop-up showcase and concert at NorthStar Church of the Arts on Friday, September 9th, and a panel discussion and film screening at the Rubenstein Arts Center on Saturday, September 10th, featuring films by Saleem Reshamwala, Abbas Rattani, and Aleah Marrow.
Presented as part of Duke Performances’ Building Bridges Initiative, funded, in part, by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art & the National Endowment for the Arts, & co-sponsored by the Duke Islamic Studies Center. In partnership with the Duke Middle East Studies Center.
