Black Atlantic

March 26-31, 2018

This Spring, Duke Performances hosts its inaugural Black Atlantic festival, a six-day event in downtown Durham exploring the music of Africa and the diaspora through the Americas. In addition to the performances, the festival will feature a number of free public events, including a keynote, a pre-performance Bachata dance class, a discussion on the history of cultural exchange between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and a demonstration and conversation with participating artists Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo.

For additional context on the performers and the history of the Black Atlantic, we invite you to explore the blog maintained by Duke professor Laurent Dubois and his graduate students from Black Atlantic, a Spring 2018 course crosslisted in Romance Studies, History, and African and African American Studies.
