You have never experienced surround sound like you will with Yamato, the Japanese Taiko drumming group bringing their program “Hinotori” – The Wings of Phoenix to Duke. Since 1993, performing more than 4000 shows across 54 countries, Yamato brings to the stage more than 40 Taiko drums, all with different characters and sizes including their largest drum, two meters in diameter and 1100 pounds.

Taiko drumming is a centuries-old tradition in Japanese culture and this ensemble both honors this long tradition and pushes the boundaries of what Taiko drumming can be. The superb athleticism and technique brought to the stage provide an evening of true spectacle.

Their drums explode with energy, but the group also produces delicate music that provides the listener with a palette of meticulously crafted sound. As the audience is engulfed in the experience of the Taiko, they become one with the performers, creating moments of transformation.
