Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Indo-Pak Coalition

Mahanthappa’s shimmering sax runs and textured compositions have put him on the front edge of modern jazz. On alto sax, tabla, and guitar, he and his Indo-Pak Coalition turn out a synthesis of bebop chromatics and coiling ragas, something less like fusion and more like the shape of jazz to come, a “meticulously ordered” sound that “swings like mad” (New Yorker).
