Music in the Gardens: Melissa Carper

Nebraska-born vocalist-bassist Melissa Carper started her music career at age 12 in her family band. Now, after a nearly four-decade career, Carper has suddenly found herself thrust onto the national stage when “Ramblin’ Soul,” her first nationally-released solo album, was named one of 2022’s best country albums in Rolling Stone. Carper’s soulful lyrics, exceptional instrumentation, and nostalgic, wistful voice, described in Rolling Stone as “a relic from a long ago time… like a cross between Patsy Cline and Iris DeMent” has captured the attention and admiration of Nashville stalwarts and fans of Americana and classic county.

Music in the Gardens concerts take place on the lawn behind the Doris Duke Center. Lawn chairs, picnics, and blankets are encouraged. Pets are not allowed. Outside food and beverages, including beer and wine, are permitted. Food and water will also be available for purchase on-site from The Palace International, with ice cream from Scoop Local. The lawn will open at 6 p.m. University parking at the Gardens is $2/hour until 7 p.m.
In the event of rain, an alternate location will be announced by 1 p.m. on the day of the event.
