We are thrilled to open the season with Joey Alexander, the Indonesian-born pianist/composer whose fresh, graceful approach has opened doors for young people in jazz since his 2015 debut album, My Favorite Things.

Released when he was 11 years old and brought to light by mentors like Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Wynton Marsalis, his debut made him the first Indonesian to top the Billboard 100 charts — ever. But, with the Spring 2022 release of his sixth studio album, Origin, Alexander shows that he is always pushing himself to do more.

Straying from his reinterpretation of the standard repertoire, Origins features compositions entirely written and arranged by Alexander himself. In this way, Origin maps a new phase — a grown Alexander, standing fiercely, and exuberantly, on his own two feet. As Alexander leans fully into his expression, Origins simmers with ease and confidence as it swings, velvety and angular, toward the unknown.

Joey Alexander - Summer Rising (In-Studio Performance)

"Though Alexander is a technically powerful player who can execute lickety-split, two-handed unison octave figures and pull McCoy Tyner-like thunder from his instrument, his playing is also warm, direct and approachable."
