Duke Arts Presents

Ciompi Concert No. 4 featuring Edgar Meyer, Bass

Saturday, April 16, 2016 | 2:00 pm

Baldwin Auditorium

The Ciompi Quartet conclude their celebration of fifty years in residence at Duke University by welcoming former students back to campus — and to the stage — for a Duke Reunions Weekend performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, a work in the tradition of the Italian concerto grosso. Bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, praised by The New Yorker as “the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument,” joins the Ciompi for a performance of his own String Quintet, originally written for the Emerson String Quartet, and encompassing bluegrass, jazz, and classical styles. Meyer and the Ciompi conclude this celebratory concert with the Dvorák String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, op. 77, a work that foregrounds the bass and evokes the sound of a chamber orchestra. Please note the 2 PM start time for this concert.
