In a genre-crossing celebration of the links between traditional music and documentary film, composer John McDowell leads masters of Indian music as they perform the score from the Oscar-winning documentary, Born Into Brothels. (The film also won the Audience Award at the 2004 Full Frame Festival.) Telling the story of children growing up in the red-light district of Calcutta, the film has been called “emotionally exquisite, irresistibly moving, and visually elegant.”
For the movie’s haunting soundtrack, McDowell created a tapestry of traditional musical forms using instruments from around the world. Here he and his group of virtuoso musicians play while film stills are projected behind them, setting up the interplay between image and sound, documentary and performance.
