DJ Spooky (a.k.a. Paul D. Miller) is a writer, conceptual artist, and pioneer in the field of mashups and mixing, a politically-minded musical archivist who works at the borders of performance art and musical statement. In a world-premiere multi-media event devised exclusively for Soul Power, Spooky connects soul music’s “then” and “now,” cutting soul-inspired vinyl with footage from Wattstax, Mel Stuart’s acclaimed documentary.  Wattstax chronicles the monumental 1972 concert—featuring Isaac Hayes, the Staples Singers, and Richard Pryor—Stax Records staged in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Spooky’s 2004 Rebirth of A Nation, a concert event based on D.W. Griffith’s infamous film, ran to rave reviews at New York’s Lincoln Center Festival, as well as UNC-CH’s Memorial Hall.

Lecture/Demonstration by DJ Spooky

Friday, 2/8/08, 3 pm

Frank Porter Graham Great Hall

UNC Chapel Hill's Student Union

During his multimedia presentation, Miller will use historical texts and rare audio and film recordings to illustrate the history of digital art and media. Using the DJ's mix as a template, he will discuss how today's artists can rearrange the cultural ideas and objects that bombard us to produce something new and expressive. Miller will also discuss technology's impact on DJ culture and the issues that arise from it, such as intellectual property rights and ownership of ideas.

The UNC event is free and open to the public. For more information please click here.
