Byron is a clarinet genius and jazz innovator who has made a career out of exposing his music’s varied roots: as Time magazine says, “calling Don Byron a jazz musician is like calling the Pacific wet—it just doesn’t begin to describe it.” The polymathic Bronx native has recently honored Junior Walker, the Motown singer and saxophone legend, by rereading the older man’s music on an acclaimed record, Do the Boomerang.
For Soul Power, Byron picks up the tenor sax to recreate the funky energy of that album, retracing crucial Walker tracks like “Shotgun” and “What Does it Take to Win Your Love.” Byron appears with his band and Chris Thomas King, the maddeningly talented singer-guitarist who may be best known for his turn as blues legend Robert Johnson in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
"[T]his is no academic set of Walker tunes, it's funky, it swings, and the grooves are deep and wide. [...] This baby is a smoking slab of greasy soul with a jazzman's sense of adventure."
--All Music Guide
“This tribute to the late R&B icon Junior Walker isn’t some kind of soul-jazz hybrid; it’s rough-and-ready, down-and-dirty rhythm and blues—as it should be. At the live dates coming up in the next few months, there’d better be room for people to dance, because Do the Boomerang is a booty-shaking disc that few will be able to resist.”
