Like the quietly analytical Monk, Alonzo King understands his art as a kind of sideways science, one bent on developing a new language out of ballet’s traditional forms. The San Francisco Chronicle says that “King torques and twists classicism into a universal language.”

This program was devised by LINES especially for Following Monk, and promises to fuse varying cultural traditions into a combination that nods to Monk’s influence and looks ahead, envisioning new ways sound can translate into motion.

In The Moroccan Project the plaintive energy and melodic blending of the Moroccan songs is made tangible in choreography that reflects the intricate rhythms of emotion and community.  Both heady and visceral, Following the Subtle Current Upstream was created for Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, the most distinguished African American dance company in America, and captures what King calls “a subtle inner calling.”

Theoretically accomplished, this Monk-inspired program is also a case study in the gut-wrenching effects of beauty.

“When the [LINES] company dances, I think of diamonds --twisting in the light or rapidly scratching complex codes on glass.”
