Portastatic’s sweet, sad, anthemic music ought to sound gorgeous in the Gardens at twilight. The band – in this iteration, a quartet – is a project of Mac McCaughan, who, more than two decades ago helped launch indie rock pacesetter Superchunk. Since 1992, Portastatic has put out 10 acclaimed albums on Merge Records – the world-beater label that Mac helps run out of “a fine old building” in downtown Durham.
