In this concert, Mallarmé Chamber Players presents the work of three oft-lauded African-American composers. Undine Smith Moore’s pioneering Afro-American Suite recasts spirituals in a chamber setting; T.J. Anderson’s audacious Spirit Songs (a 1993 commission for Yo-Yo Ma) expertly tends the terrain between improvisation and notation; and Anthony Kelley’s lovely miniature, Sonata Song, maintains Kelley’s oeuvre while drawing stylistic inspiration from Debussy, Brahms, and Gershwin.
