Durham’s Madison Elites are a shout band out of the United House of Prayer church, where brass instruments operate like a gospel choir. The Elites, based out of their church at 505 Holloway St., perform as an ensemble of 10 to 15 brass players – mostly trombones, but some trumpets and tubas as well. In concert, they play music from their congregation, slow soulful dirges and riotous anthems that layer harmony over roiling rhythms.
