The Mt. Airy-based sacred steel unit, the Allen Boys – fronted by the dazzling pedal steel player DaShawn Hickman – were brought up in the Pentecostal House of God church. In this predominantly African-American congregation – made known widely by the music of the Campbell Brothers and Robert Randolph – the incisive pedal steel guitar accompanies the whole of the service. Of late, the Allen Boys have gained a good measure of justified acclaim by delivering their jubilant music to a grateful outside-the-church audience.
