Amidst the transformation of his filmmaking career, from underground movies to unusual Hollywood comedies, John Waters has maintained a steady platform. He is perhaps most well-known for writing and directing the 1988 cult classic film Hairspray. Born in Baltimore in 1946, Waters is tied to the city that molded him, filming all of his work in Baltimore on a modest budget. He also encompasses Baltimore’s essence of strange in his movies, breaking the boundaries of what is acceptable in film-making. Waters, known for his fearless approach to a breadth of film topics, covering everything from drugs to religion, said, “Secretly I think that all my films are politically correct, though they appear not to be. That's because they're made with a sense of joy."
