Discovered by Tropicália founder Caetano Veloso, Rodrigues is a Candomblé priestess, a political activist, and “the new voice of Brazilian music” (New York Times), a singer whose bold but sinuous vocals burn with what the Boston Globe calls a “resonant, clear contralto.” Her songs run with the pulse of her home city, Salvador de Bahia, but she can decelerate too, alternating Afro-samba staccatos with inflections from gospel, opera, and the chanting of the Catholic church she’s long since left behind.
