A Brazilian of Lebanese descent, born just outside Sao Paolo, Assad spent her youth in Rio, where her older brothers became master guitarists and she first encountered the genre-defying diversity of her country’s native music. Her own virtuoso guitar-work swerves from the Brazilian sounds she’s in dialogue with and comes back again: she covers the Eurythmics and tropes U2, but then shifts into Bossa Nova riffs and flamenco-inspired love songs.
