The Ciompi Quartet launches its bold 2013/2014 season with a sampling from across the centuries. The program opens with the first of Haydn’s opus 76 quartets, the crowning achievement from the father of the string quartet. It continues with Shostakovich’s 12th quartet, that modern master’s nod to the tonal experimentation then sweeping the musical world. And it concludes with a quintessentially Carolinian chamber work, the Appalachian Concerto that blends a string quartet with acclaimed bluegrass ensemble the Kruger Brothers.

PROGRAM
Haydn:
String Quartet No. 60 in G Major, Op. 76, No. 1
Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 12 in D-flat Major, Op. 133
Jens Kruger: Appalachian Concerto
