Music in the Gardens: Black Twig Pickers

Wednesday, July 27, 2016 | 7:00 pm

Motorco Music Hall

ALERT: Moving Black Twig Pickers at Music in the Gardens Indoors to Motorco Music Hall.

Heavy lightning & thunderstorms are forecast for tonight at showtime. As a result, we have elected to move this evening’s concert out of the Gardens & over to MOTORCO MUSIC HALL, located in Durham at 723 Rigsbee Ave. We’ll open the doors at 6:15 PM & start the concert at 7 PM.

While Motorco does not permit outside food or drink, they do offer food & beverage service onsite. Additionally, outside chairs are not permitted in the venue; there is limited seating available at the space. We look forward to seeing you at Motorco — safe & dry — for a great show this evening.

Tickets are still available online & at the door.

Black Twig Pickers are an old time Appalachian string band with their eye on the future. “The rough carpentry of these songs lets the dust fly, lets the grain show, but the songs are all the purer, all the sweeter, for their scuffs,” raved PopMatters. This foursome rooted in Southwest Virginia play an “exuberant blast of banjo, fiddle and hoedown rhythm,” declared the Financial Times, “though the songs drift into more intriguing, avant-folk territory with the raga drones that hum hypnotically alongside the whiskery traditionalism.” Pitchfork called their music “heavy on high-lonesome ambience yet deeply rooted in the clay of regional tradition.” Live, the Black Twig Pickers have a joyful, unbridled energy, making old-time music seem new.
