Duke Arts Presents

Alexi Murdoch + Mount Moriah

Saturday, October 22, 2011 | 8:00 pm

Reynolds Industries Theater

The European troubadour Alexi Murdoch, “a kindred spirit to the intricate folk of Nick Drake” (NPR), studied with Reynolds Price at Duke before moving to Los Angeles and catching the ear of KCRW music director Nic Harcourt. Murdoch rejected ensuing label deals and self-released the gorgeous record Time Without Consequences, which was widely licensed to television and film — most notably supplying all of the music for Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’ Away We Go. At Reynolds, Murdoch showcases material from his highly anticipated new album, Towards the Sun.

Murdoch is supported by Durham’s own dark yet redemptive country-rock band Mount Moriah, who went on a major tour with the Indigo Girls before releasing a potent debut on their own Holidays for Quince label. Hailed by the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle as a truly rare stage presence, singer Heather McEntire brings a punk edge to classic songs in the lineage of Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. Both acts are united by their stellar songwriting, independent nerve, and strong ties to Durham.
