Béla Fleck Brings the Banjo Back to Africa
Wednesday, October 12, 2011 | 7:00 pm
Carolina Theatre (309 W. Morgan St.)
$5 (More ticket info below)

Throw Down Your Heart follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of the banjo and record an album.  It’s a boundary-breaking musical adventure that celebrates the beauty and complexity of Africa—an Africa that is very different from what is often seen in the media today. The documentary features dP artist Bassekou Kouyaté.

Followed by a conversation with two banjo scholars—Duke Prof. Laurent Dubois and UNC Prof. Philip Gura.

“Bassekou Kouyaté plays one of the West African banjo-like instruments, the ngoni. In fact he is a genius on it, one of the greatest ever.”
—Béla Fleck

“An exhilarating feast of sight and sound.”
